These disorders can have negative effects on the health of both mother and offspring, but little is known about how they develop. She spent nine months in Madrid, Spain volunteering and mentoring children. She received a Masters in Education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and went on to work for the Boston Public School System. In 2008 Karen joined the Tufts admissions team and became Dean of Admissions in July 2016.
